TAMBOURA
Text: An instrument of the guitar species, with strings of wire struck with a plectrum. The neck is long, and the body, of gourd shape, is often beautifully ornamented. The Tamboura is found in Persia, Turkey, Egypt, and Hindustan, and it was known to the Assyrians and Egyptians under various names. The Egyptians called it nofre or nefer, a term said to be synonymous with nebel, the Hebrew word for a stringed instrument.
