Spaulding, William H.
Text: "The UFO papers." U. S. Central Intelligence Agency report released on 15 December 1978 under the Freedom of Information Act. Brilliant white sphere observed on the horizon, deep inside Russia, from vicinity of the Mehrabad Airport, Teheran, Iran. Sphere expanded greatly, dimming as it expanded. Observed by two airliners. On 10 September, 1976 British European Airways (BEA) flight (number 831) from Moscow to London observed a blinding, intense light for 10 to 15 minutes. Soviet authorities suggested the pilot should not ask questions about the source of the light. Evidence of the development and testing of large scalar interferometry devices by the Soviet Union. See: Roberts, Gwynne: "Witness to a superweapon?" Sunday Times (London), Aug. 17, 1980. Article deals with a giant semicircular light phenomenon inside the Soviet Union, seen from Afghanistan in September, 1979 by Nick Downie, a former British war cameraman of some note. Looking into the Soviet Union toward Saryshagan Missile Test Center, Downie saw the phenomenon twice, and later met an Afghan who had seen it several months before. A possibly related phenomenon is reported in Brackenbridge, M.: "Unidentified Phenomenon," Marine Observer. 48, 1978. p. 21-22. Note that the first "nuclear flash" detected by Vela satellites above the Atlantic Ocean off the southwest coast of Africa occurred on September 22, 1979-- close in time to Downie's sightings toward Saryshagan.
