Text: "Blindness: An autoimmune disease?" Diseases of the retina, which cause about a third of all blindness, may be an autoimmune disease, according to ophthalmologist Vernon Wong at Georgetown University Medical School. Inoculation of monkeys with the isolated retinal outer segments removed from other monkeys caused the inoculated animals to develop retinal blindness.
