STRING

Text: Prepared wire or catgut, plain or covered, used for musical instruments. Strings of steel or brass wire are used for all instruments which are struck with hammers or plectra, as dulcimers, pianos, etc. Violin strings are made of catgut, each string being of a different thickness according to the tone and tension required, the fourth string being covered with a fine wire either of silver or white metal; hence it is called the silver string.
