MACHOL or MAHHOL

Text: [Heb.] A word often found in theOld Testament, associated with "toph" (timbrel), and almost always rendered in the English version by dances or dancing. But some authorities trace the word to a root meaning pierced or bored, and therefore consider it to have been a flute. It is not imporbable that Machol and toph may mean "pipe andtabor," but as these two instruments are often associated with dancing, our version, and others which follow it, cannot in any case be said to be incorrect.
