Text: many guitars have only 20-22 frets but some 'cutaway' style electric models have 24 (2 octaves) 12 frets equal an octave .....the dots represent third, fifth, seventh, and the 2 dots equal the 12th or octave fret.......the spacing between the frets are determined by the distance between the top of the neck and the bridge.......by halfing the distance of the string you should get a natural octave harmonic approxamitely the twelfth fret if the guitar is set up properly ......the first fret is determined byt dividing the distance between the twelfth fret and the top of the neck by 12 ....to determine the next divide the distance between the first fret and the 12th and divide by 12 again.....this process goes on to the 12th then starts over as the beginning did to proceed after the 12th
