I am absolutely disgusted with NASA and have ranted on it
before. This last failure of $165 million which was
preceded about 3 months ago by a similar failure costing
$125 million just ticks me off beyond belief.
This chasing after MARS is about the stupidest thing I can
image any responsible space enthusiast or agency could
support because we still don't have the BASICS of a fixed
space station and a fixed lunar colony to build a lot more
experience in space and allow many, MANY others to visit and
experiment there before trying to get to Mars and do
anything of use beyond teasing the public.
I have LONG believed that humans ORIGINATED on Mars, trashed
the planet and colonized earth, that many of the legends and
myths that reference lost continents, civilizations or
cities could well be referring to Mars but the truth was
lost in the mists of time.
What leads me to think this highly probable is that Man is
the only warm blooded mammal on earth without a penile bone,
not even a vestigial one. And that man, if put in an
environment completely devoid of outside light and left for
6 months or so, giving him/her the opportunity to determine
their own daily cycles, will wind up with a 25 hour day, not
24 hours...a Martian day is 25.1 hours. Thus, it is
cellular memory that dictates our origins. No missing link,
we are just aliens here..<g>..
Anyway, the point here is to bear in mind, NASA has a yearly
budget of $13 BILLION (13,000,000,000)...are you getting
that? Thirteen THOUSAND MILLION...
So JUST these two recent failures total $290,000,000 down
the tubes. I understand of the attempts to reach Mars, this
will be the 12TH failure!!!! One of the missions cost one
BILLION dollars and it failed too.
Check out this key comment about NASAs MASSIVE expenditures
(NOT) on alternative lift and thrust programs;
> The proposers will negotiate for grants, contracts or cooperative
> agreements worth a TOTAL PROGRAM value of $430,000.
What the heck is THAT? $430,000 out of the recent 290
Million blown????
Even if they mean $430,000 X 6 projects, that is still only
about 3 million bucks. Why doesn't the media and the public
demand a complete revamp of the NASA system or junk it and
start over as the managers obviously don't have a clue?

(1) John Cramer (University of Washington, Seattle, WA)
proposed a test to see if rapidly changing electric fields
can affect inertia as suggested in 1991 by James Woodward,
in the journal Foundations of Physics Letters. If there is
such an effect, it may be exploited to develop a new method
of space propulsion. In any case, the research will add to
the understanding of how inertia is tied to the surrounding
matter of the universe.

(2) Jordan Maclay (Quantum Fields LLC, Richland Center, WI)
and MEMS Optical Inc. (Huntsville, AL) proposed an
experimental and theoretical study of quantum vacuum energy.
The experiments will use micro-electromechanical devices to
test force and energy effects predicted by quantum
electrodynamics.

(3) Harry Ringermacher (General Electric Corporate Research
and Development, Schenectady, NY) with the collaboration of
researchers from Washington University, St. Louis, MO, and
United Technologies Research Center, East Hartford, CT,
proposed a magnetic resonance experiment to test a theory
linking electromagnetism, mass, and time. Ringermacher
originally published the theory in 1994, in the journal
Classical and Quantum Gravity.

(4) Glen Robertson and Ron Litchford (NASA Marshall Space
Flight Center, Huntsville, AL) proposed an experimental
study of possible links between superconductors and gravity
as recently discussed in several scientific journals. They
plan to use a torsion balance, similar to those used to
search for material-dependant gravitational effects, to
search for superconductor-gravity effects.

(5) Kevin Malloy (University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM)
and Raymond Chiao (University of California at Berkeley,
Berkeley, CA) proposed experiments and theoretical work on
"superluminal quantum tunneling," an effect where light
appears to pass through barriers faster than it travels
through normal space. The proposed research will critically
examine some of the faster-than-light
: hypotheses associated with this effect.
(6) Serguei Krasnikov (Altamonte Springs, FL) proposed to
theoretically assess the necessity of "negative energy"
suggested in recent scientific literature on hyperfast
travel. The possibilities for enabling hyperfast travel is
more feasible if negative energy is not required.
