The following is a reply to a guy asking about the Clem engine. I
finally checked out what was available in asphalt sprayers.
----------------------
No, nothing really new with Clem though a fellow in New Zealand has
built his version of the Clem engine with no success yet...he reported
it on the interact discussion list which can be read or searched from
the loader paget at http://www.keelynet.com click on KeelyNet
discussion list, then list archive, then scroll to the bottom and click
on date that will show all the newest entries.
Funding and time could certainly get the plans which I am told only one
set exists...have to do some horse trading for that as the guy who has
them is intensely paranoid...but Clem indicates the whole thing came
from watching an asphalt spraying machine continue to run for up to 30
minutes with no power applied.
Apparently some kind of negative viscosity in combination with a
vortex....he didn't patent his because it had already been patented in
the form of an asphalt sprayer.
Note Clem was active in the 1970's so the asphalt sprayers listed below
from http://www.uspto.gov only go back to 1976 and asphalt spraying
sytems go back to the early 1930s.

A portable machine for transporting heated asphalt products for use in
repairing asphalt pavement. The machine includes a hopper for
containing premixed asphalt and aggregate and a reservoir positioned
below and contiguous with the hopper for containing a liquid asphalt
tack material. A source of heat is disposed in the liquid asphalt tank
for heating the liquid asphalt which, in turn, heats the premixed
asphalt and aggregate in the hopper. The machine also includes a
hydraulic power plant for operating a screw conveyor in the hopper, a
pump communicating with the liquid asphalt tank, and for providing
hydraulic power to the various tools employed in preparing and finishing
pavement repairs.
