I must strongly disagree with you regarding your assessment of

fusion. You claim this is nothing but...

In reality if the cold fusion effect is caused by spontaneous
heat
generation within a confined molecular lattice, is is reasonable to
assume that the heat generated would rupture the confining molecular
structure. This is seen by you as a consumptive process, but instead is
is the tip of the iceberg showing the way to a new energy technology.
Yes the palladium structure may be consumed, but if we are open minded
we can learn from this experience and design other techniques which can
extract the ZPE without these draw backs.
