Well, I do not consider my self 'smart' enough to figure this out... only
lucky enough to have stumbled across some eye opening information and open
minded enough to consider it. Oddly enough, most of the poeple I have talked to
about this problem that are in my field (computing) are clueless. I've even talked to
senior analysts in pretty high positions and they initially just laugh and think
I'm kidding them, if I press a bit harder and they see I'm serious they respond
with a typical 'sophist' like attitude and state that there really isnt any problem
and begin to state 'surface' examples of how essential services will be compliant.
If I push further and drop a few nasty but little know facts of Y2K on them, their
eyes begin to bug out a bit, they look a bit worried and stressed and begin to clam
up with a look on their face that clearly expresses that they'd rather not discuss
the issue any further and would I please shut up and go away now? People hate
having their perceptual reality challenged and will go to great lengths to protect it
regardless of whether its a sense of false economical security or a selected dogmatic
philosophy. Many of my colleagues are more focused on paying for their new house,
cleaning their BMW, going shopping with their girl friend / wife....or in most cases
learning new development tools / lingos. Who has time to consider their local / social
environment? I'll bet if you were to line up 10 computer professionals that worked in slightly
different fields...say networking, hardware engineering, programming, the majority of them
wouldnt even know what was on the news last night. Most of the people I've met that are
working on Y2K issues think its nothing more than a great cooincidence / opportunity to make cash...
unless they happen to be working on an essential services related project perhaps.
I can't see 15 % of the population trying to withdraw their cash until its to late to do so....
I say live your life to its fullest today for tommorrow we may die <g> and if at all possible
maybe at least keep an eye out for peculiar changes and try to adapt for them.
