Ken thanks for the tip, I'm simply not familiar with the term 'oersteds'
but had the gut feeling that I was missing something or not understanding

then what does just Gauss represent? I thought it was just the strength of the
field itself? Does oersteds measure internal field strength while gauss
measures external?

Ken this was a great link! I looked at the site and sent them an e-mail,
they responded fairly quickly... bit expensive, but still a good resource
to know about!
