Jerry Decker is quite correct that if you want to make a magnet with resin and iron filings for instance, you make a
mold, fit the core magnet in its place and pour the resin with the iron filings into the reserved spaces. This will align
the filings correctly in relation to the magnetic field before the resin sets.

Sorry about the omission.

Incidentally, Jeremy's idea of using an electromagnet to determine the wanted shape is excellent and useful. This
way you can experiment easily with shape and field strength before committing yourself to a lot of work creating a
custom permanent magnet, only to find out it doesn't work.
