Re: building an ozone generator

Hi all,

One more warning concerning ozone generation, in addition to the serious
amount of harmful UV radiation produced by a mercury arc lamp:

Most arc lamps, mercury or other, produce UV. And many have quartz
envelopes, as opposed to glass. Quartz transmits the UV readily, whereas
glass blocks most of it. The UV produces ozone. A good rule of thumb with
any arc lamp or flash lamp, is that it IS producing UV, and sufficient eye,
and exposed skin protection should be utilized. Any "smell" of ozone
indicates serious amounts of UV are present.

Ozone, in sufficient concentrations, is a respiratory irritant, and can cause
harm/damage to the entire respiratory tract, as well as mucous membranes.
(eyes, mouth, etc.)

So a great deal of caution is in order if you DIY with this or any other
system of generating ozone.

While this is not any medical advice, do cease ozone production in air if any
adverse symptoms appear - such as irritation of nose, throat, lungs, eyes,
etc.

An ozone generator can give a house or apartment a "fresh", "clean" smell -
like after a thunderstorm, when operated at a low level. There is a
temptation to increase this level, or run it for too long - with the logic
that if a little is good, then a lot is better. This is NOT the case.
Increasing exposure is detrimental to us and our pets!

Sincerely,
