Stretching to extend limbs

Hi Folks!

Last night on channel 11 news around 10:15PM here in
Dallas, they mentioned the Trinity Medical Center
where a new technique was in use for 'stretching'
limbs.

One guy had suffered a serious accident a few years
ago where he lost 2" in the length of one leg.

It showed a circular clamp thing that hooked onto the
waste of the patient, something about a 'Taylor ring'
that hooked into another circular ring that was
attached to this guys leg.

It has metal arms with what looked like a doubled
ended threaded turnbuckle so that you could tighten
the thing to apply pressue to the leg.

The idea was it would stretch the leg over time in
tiny increments (4 months was quoted) and would add
the missing 2" of length.

The patient had to do physical therapy and I could not
tell if they also used electrical shocks to stimulate
bone growth as noted in earlier posts to this list.

But a very close friend of many years has about 4"
missing from his leg from an early childhood issue
that has pained him for years and resulting in
unimaginable problems in his life. So I'll pass this
onto him hoping he can be fitted out for it if
possible.

As Laurel and Hardy as this sounds, they reported
incredibly good results. Did not catch if there was
any pain involved but there must be some. I also have
a problem with 2" of growth in 4 months, so I think
that is out of place, probably that the guy had only
been doing it for 4 months.

The idea of molding body parts isn't new as with the
stretched ears, lips, skull reshaping, tiny feet in
Japan, etc...if its alive and dynamic it could be
altered in such a fashion.

Oddly enough, the movie FACEOFF was on another channel
earlier and they referred to using a 'morphogenic'
face shield when transferring the one face to another
as in the premise of the movie, though it was
suprisingly good...<g>...the idea is bizarre at the
very least.
