Jerry,
Herbalife has testimonials from a number of people who have lost over one
hundred pounds--I'm not sure of the time span. One person lost 402 pounds.
He was originally 615. He went down to 213. This might be a more appealing
diet than submarine sandwiches, but who knows?
Meanwhile, here is some information I recieved on the topic.

Hello Mr. Sufian,
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) sponsored a public conference on
evaluating consumer oriented weight loss products and programs
http://www.ftc.gov/os/1998/9803/weightlo.rpt.htm.

Subject: evaluating wieght loss products

Greetings,
Do you know of sosurces of original papers containing evaluations
(experiments, user surveys) of specific weight loss products and programs.
Examples of specific products are those produced by Herbalife, Freelife,
Rexall. Examples of programs are Weight Watchers and Overeaters Anonymous.
Thanks,
Stephen K. Sufian

I checked out briefly, the FTC site. It looks very rationally considered.
One recommendation that seems to be commonly made is that improvements in
diet are enhanced considerably by appropriate (moderate) amounts of
exercise.
Hope this proves useful
Steve
