Weightlessness created in laboratory
SALLY FISHER
While the country's rocket programme is in tatters, Japanese
scientists have successfully created in a laboratory the
zero-gravity conditions found in space.
The scientists, who used high-powered magnets to create a
weightless environment, believe their achievement is a world
first.
The advance will allow research and development of new
materials for space exploration as well as experiments which
can normally be carried out only during expensive space
flights.
The anti-gravity device was invented by Tohoku University in
Sendai and the Government's Industrial Research Institute.
A team of scientists built a super-conducting magnet that is
40,000 times stronger than the Earth's magnetic force.
