If you don't already know the direction of north in your area from the road
layout and the travels of the sun (in which case I feel kind of sorry for
you), the North or Pole Star is the last faint star in the tail of Ursa
Minor, the Little Dipper.

It can most easily be found by following with your eyes in a straight line
the two bright stars making up the end of the "cup" of Ursa Major, the big
Dipper. It is about 5 times the distance as the distance between these two
stars in the Big Dipper.

It is getting very faint and probably can't be seen anymore in cities.
