I think I may have a partial explanation for your burnt out transformer
I think that the rf current wouldn't have blown the small fuses very fast
because rf
is conducted around the outside of the conductor. With a single strand fuse
it will heating effect will be very localised around the outside of it. This
will gradually evapourate the wire making it thinner. (when i say gradually i
mean 0.5 seconds or so) Whereas the higher current fuses may have been multi-
strand with much more surface area so a much shorter period before the fuse
blows when handeling rf.
As for the transformer the inductance of the secondary will be matched for
60hz
so for high frequencies it will effectively be a short.
I still cannot understand how you could generate a pulse within the time the
fuses would have held for powerful enough to blow the transformer.
