What is sonoluminescence?

Sonoluminescence is a process during which a small bubble of air, trapped withina glass vessel, begins to emit light. The bubble of air is levitated at the centerof the vessel by a standing sound wave. This sound wave is produced by a pair of piezoelectric transducers which are affixed to the sides of the vessel. The water in the vessel is "degassed" through a separate process. Thecomposition of the gases which are dissolved in the waterplays a role in the color and intensity of the light emmitted.

The Experimental SetUp



Experimental Set-Up
This is the experimental set-up used in my experiments. The piezoelectric transducers are supplied as a package from Channel Industries for $95.00. Using a simple function generator to create a sound wave, an ordinary audio amplifier to create the 110dB sound pressures and a digital oscilloscope to monitor the sound field, you canreplicate this experiment.
