Yes SCRs are much better. The xenon tends to heat up and develops different
characteristics when used continuously.

I build mine on the fly and have not formally penned all my thoughts and
other embellishments of this circuit. Any SCR with PEAK current of at
least 600 amps should work. Generally a 20 amp continuous with the
appropriate peak rating will do. I will have to draw up cct in due course.
In your case 940uf cap will require at least 1000 amps peak.

Nearly all professional devices use SCRs I have not seen any ccts on the
net hence my own design. I can tell you it is far better than the ones I
built using the flash method. Also I found using caps in parallel reduces
internal resistance and hence provides much quicker and higher energy pulse.

If you do make the circuit I would love to hear how it turned out.
