Managed to get to the patent office in D.C. today and found the patent for
the bazooka type of vortex generator....(3,342,171)....It has the piston
action like was mentioned before but also the cocking/priming lever
actuated an air pump and accumulator to augment the vortex with high
pressure air hence a more powerful vortex...... The bazooka design lends
itself to upscaling to a simple but effective vortex cannon....cool...

Patent number 2,855,714 has a good description on how the vortex
forms......The mechanics of forming smoke rings are well understood and are
explained in numerous texts on physics and fluid dynamics. The manner
which smoke rings are formed by the present toy gun may be briefly
explained as follows. Sudden forward movement of the disc or plunger
initially compresses the smoke/air immeadiately in front of the plunger and
produces an wave front which moves twoard the exit orifice. Upon the wave
front reaching the oriface, the new compressed smoke/air in the casing
issues thru the oriface in a forming of a puff. The forward surface
seperating the moving mass of compressesd smoke/air behind the wave front
from the realitivly still air ahead of the wave front is commonly referred
to as the "surface of discontinuity". When this surface of discontinuity
reaches the oriface, it is, in effect, rolled up by the circular edge(of
the oriface)there,(Coanda Effect),of to form a vortex ring which is
propagated outwardly through the oriface to form a smoke ring......
