Symptoms: Autopsy Death Sensation of heaviness
We received from a physician the following information on 13 FEB 2008: In 2006 a rabies vaccine (manufacturer unknown was given to a female veterinarian technician, who was in her mid 20's (see case no. MA2008-0186). She decided to get vaccinated in the context of a rabies preexposure trial, due to cost reasons. Between the first and second dose of the rabies vaccine the subject received an additional flu shot (manufacturer unknown). After the vaccination the subject felt heavy on one side of her body, she was hospitalised and passed away one week after the second (?) vaccination. An autopsy has been performed. Addendum: We received on 17 FEB 2008 the information from the physician, that the woman was vaccinated with Imovax and not with RabAvert. No change in assessment.

Initial report received on 14 February 2007 from a health care provider who has acquired the information from a newspaper article. Per the newspaper article, it has been reported by the state department of health that an eight year old child, who had received a flu vaccination and had unspecified underlying health problems, died from the disease influenza on 12 February 2007. Additional information was not provided related to this case. (The firefighter that was also reported in the title of the article had not been vaccinated.

This case was reported by a nurse, and described the occurrence of influenza in a subject of unspecified age and gender who was vaccinated with influenza virus vaccine for prophylaxis. The subject's medical history, concurrent conditions, and concurrent medications were not reported. On an unspecified date, the subject received unspecified dose of Flu vaccine (unknown). The reporting nurse did not have the name of the Flu vaccine that was administered. At an unspecified time after vaccination with Flu vaccine, the subject experienced influenza and lack of efficacy. It was reported that the subject "died from the flu, however, it was unknown which strain of flu the subject died from". It was unknown whether an autopsy was performed. No further information was provided at the time of reporting.

This case was reported by a healthcare professional, via a sales representative, and described the occurrence of Stevens Johnson syndrome in a female subject aged between 20 and 29 years old who was vaccinated with Flu vaccine, manufacturer unspecified) for prophylaxis. Co-suspect medication included Lamotrigine (Lamictal). On an unspecified date the subject received unspecified dose of Flu vaccine (unknown). In 2006, at an unspecified time after vaccination with Flu vaccine, the subject experienced Stevens Johnson syndrome, organ failure, flu-like symptoms, and fever. The subject was hospitalized. The subject died from Stevens Johnson syndrome. An autopsy was performed. The patient developed flu-like symptoms but had just been given the flu vaccine. She then spiked a fever of 106 degrees and was hospitalized. Lamictal was not discontinued because the providers were originally associating the events with the flu vaccine. The patient went into organ failure and was placed in the intensive care unit and then died. The autopsy results indicated that the patient died of Stevens Johnson syndrome which might have been caused by Lamictal use.

Initial information was received on 11/13/06 from the aforementioned literature citation. A 62 year old male pt, with a past medical history of hypertension and alcoholic liver cirrhosis, for which he underwent orthotopic liver transplantation, received an influenza vaccination on an unspecified date. The trade name, manufacturer or lot number were not reported. Two weeks after receiving the vaccine, the pt developed progressive generalized weakness and was diagnosed with Guillain Barre Syndrome. From initial information received on 1/4/05 from a health care professional regarding an adverse event occurring in the USA, it was reported that a male patient in his 50's received a dose of FLUZONE administered on an unspecified date. The lot number, route and site of administration were not reported. Four hours later, the patient experienced a severe hypoglycemic attack. Follow-up received on 1/2/01, indicated that the pt was an elderly female who received 1999-2000 formula influenza virus vaccine. Five to 6 months, post vax, she developed Guillain-Barre syndrome. VAERS ID 131642    A three year-old received the FLU vaccine on 10/26/99.  Got brainstem and cerebellar edema leading to brain death.  Admitted (to the hospital I presume, but there is no indication of that, including checking the box re: hospitalized) on 11/12/99, 16 days later - don't know for sure when symptoms started - perhaps on the 12th?  Anyway, had normal lumbar puncture, MRI.  Follow up MRI on the 14th showed brainstem, cerebellar edema.  Had a prior history of CNS problems after last years vaccination (also FLU?);   I think they are saying that that time she had acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis (10/98) with bilatoral temporal lobes.  Don't know when she died.   (Minnesota)

VAERS ID 131045   An 85 year-old woman received the FLU vaccine on 10/5/99.  Post vaccination she complained of a temperature (103.8) and chills (not sure of the date, although onset date says 10/12/99).   She refused to be admitted to the hospital.  Then says her temperature was 104.6, and the "R" which means respiration, but doesn't indicate what it was.   She was admitted to the hospital (10/12?, 10/14?).  Says on 10/14/99 chest X-ray showed "ARDS", what ever that is, and pneumonia.  She was placed on a ventilator "DIC", whatever that is, and died on the 25th, 20 days post vaccination.  (Florida)

VAERS ID 130869   A 43 year-old woman received the FLU vaccine on 10/11/99.    Adverse event onset date said to be 10/20/99, 9 days later, which is probably when she was diagnosed with pneumonia.   She died on 11/1/99, 21 days post vaccination.  Her MD does not feel that what occurred is related to the vaccine.  (California)

VAERS ID 130648/129826    A 77 year-old woman received the FLU and PPV vaccines on 10/6/99.  Found dead by husband one day after the vaccine.  Her husband reported that on the 6th she had a cough and chest congestion;  never in her whole life saw an MD; always treated herself w/herbs and vitamins.  In amended text it says she has had a cough and congestion recently, but that she stated she was not ill the day of the vaccine.  (Why did she get the vaccine at this time, if she never saw MDs?)  (Wisconsin)

VAERS ID 130318    Someone of unknown age and sex received the FLU vaccine on 10/12/99.  Says the adverse event onset date was 10/19/99, 7 days post vaccination.  Also says post vaccination  this person developed respiratory arrest and died (not sure of the date - on the 19th?).  It was reported that the medical director felt there was no connection between the vaccination and the events which followed.  (New York)

VAERS ID 134575     A 50 year-old woman received the FLU vaccine on 10/20/99.   The next day she started to feel ill.  Was transported to the ER on 11/12 by ambulance and died a few hours later.  She did not see an MD between 10/20 and 11/12/99.  Sister says the flu vaccine caused her sister's death.  (Kansas)
