These years of separation from his mother and family left their lasting impression and provided the insight and drive to his life's work. When he joined the newly formed National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), NIH he formed the Developmental Behavioral Biology Program and became its Health Scientist Administrator from 1966-1980. A major focus of this NICHD research program was to understand why depression and violence results from maternal-infant/child separations. Caspar Weinberger, then Secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (renamed the Department of Health and Human Services-DHHS), directed the NICHD to expand its studies to uncover the origins of child abuse and neglect and of violence in the home. Dr. Prescott's seventeen-year federal career was terminated for supporting DHEW Secretary Caspar Weinberger's Directive to the NICHD and for opposing the NICHD's abandonment of its agency responsibility for supporting child abuse and neglect research programs.

Newman (1995) has summarized the essential role of breastfeeding for healthy human development where WHO/UNICEF (1990) have recommended breastfeeding for "two years of age or beyond" that, inexplicably, is not supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP, 1997). This issue of duration of breastfeeding for optimal biological and mental-social health is particularly urgent when it is recognized that only 6.8% of American mothers are breastfeeding at 12 months; 2.7% are breastfeeding at 24months; and only 1% at 30 months or more (Hediger, 2001; Prescott, 2001). These statistics on breastfeeding become even more alarming in the light of child and youth suicidal deaths which have doubled in the 5-14 year age group over this past generation and has been the third leading cause of death in the 15-24 year age group over this past generation. Further, for the 5-14 year age group the ratio of suicide rates to homicide rates have consistently increased over this past generation, as follows: 1979--36 %; 1994--60%; 1998--73%. It is also a sobering statistic to note that more children and youth (5-24 year age group) have died from suicidal death in the past ten years (est 55,000) than combat lives lost during the ten year Vietnam War (47, 355). In August, 2002, when I was field testing 3 ounce towerbusters across Southern Idaho from city to city, disabling all the towers there, I watched thunderheads routinely develop over each city as I finished. [2009 April] Pandemic of panic - After salmonella, bird flu, the Millennium Bug... should we actually be scared this time? In 1996, when the greatest food scare of all exploded over BSE, front-page headlines greeted the admission on Newsnight by the Government's chief scientist John Pattison that the death toll from CJD caught by eating beef could within a few years reach 500,000. A year later, however, scarcely any attention at all was paid to Dr Pattison's confession that he had now revised his figure downwards to just '100' (indeed, it now seems highly likely that beef was not the cause of CJD at all).
It is not long since, in 2005, an even more senior WHO official was telling us that, any time soon, a worldwide epidemic of Asian bird flu could kill '150 million people'. The actual death toll from bird flu to date is around 200, barely double the number already dead when that hysteria was at its height.

I selected every culture in which there was information on the practice of carrying or not carrying the infant on the body of the mother. The second variable was data on peaceful or violent behaviors. And the third involved sexual behavior, specifically whether adolescent sexual expression was permitted or punished. In the 400 culture data base, information was available on both child rearing practices and violence in 49 primitive cultures, which became my study. To my great surprise there was a 73% accurate classification of cultures as peaceful or violent based on that single variable, whether the infant was carried on the body of the mother throughout the day.
Once I published that data, cultural anthropologists corrected several errors in the database which resulted in 80% of the cultures being accurately classified as either peaceful or violent.
The increase in violent behaviors is a direct result of pleasure deprivation, which implies a lack of empathy, caring for others, a lack of compassion for the pain and suffering of others. It creates children without conscience and adults without conscience. Children are now killing children. More parents and adults are killing children.
Close, intimate body contact with the mother provides the foundation for emotional trust upon which other relationships will be built. Without that first foundation all other relationships will flounder or fail.
The warmth of human touch and security of body contact, are without question, the most effective way to reduce violence in our culture. Fragmentation and isolation of human relationships, the denial of true intimacy and the pleasure it implies, builds into the brain a predisposition for anger, rage and violence. And the uncompromising verdict of Dr Mörner, who for 35 years has been using every known scientific method to study sea levels all over the globe, is that all this talk about the sea rising is nothing but a colossal scare story.
    Despite fluctuations down as well as up, "the sea is not rising," he says. "It hasn't risen in 50 years." If there is any rise this century it will "not be more than 10cm (four inches), with an uncertainty of plus or minus 10cm".

Coming to grips with these U.S./CIA activities in broad numbers and figuring out how many people have been killed in the jungles of Laos or the hills of Nicaragua is very difficult. [2009 March] This Contemptuous Hearing by Martin Walker MA The one hundred odd charges intended to protect, at all costs, the reputation of the British MMR vaccine programme and pharmaceutical industry manufacturers of vaccines, while denying all vaccine damage, are sordid, corrupt and by necessity completely dishonest. The primary strategic aim of the GMC hearing is to destroy the professional reputation of Dr Wakefield.
I am truly amazed that the chief prosecutor in the case is concerned about personal satirical remarks that I have made about her. At the very heart of this charade are over one thousand children damaged in a variety of ways by the MMR vaccination; her upset is as nothing compared to the emotional, financial and personal trauma of these children and their parents. From the beginning of this two-year 'trial', these parents have been denied any voice in the proceedings. Far from having the public health in mind, the GMC and the government are acting entirely in defence of their own interests.
.......What Dr Wakefield and his colleagues have said throughout this inquisition, and over the last almost twenty years is that between 1993 and the year 2000, the Royal Free Hospital was inundated with children whose parents told doctors that after receiving their MMR vaccination, their children quickly developed a degree of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). In the most serious of these cases, but not all of them, these children consequent upon their IBD and previously having developed well, regressed into behavioural traits characteristic of autism spectrum disorder.

To bring the whole case down to its most simple, the prosecution has tried to prove two things. First that the case review paper drawing on a chronologically continuous group of 12 children who had attended the Royal Free Hospital with bowel problems for clinical enquiries, were actually a research cohort upon which Dr Wakefield and his colleagues experimented in order to prove that MMR caused autism; thereby helping these children's parents with a false civil claim against the pharmaceutical of MMR. Second, to argue the above proposition in it's clearest light, they have tried to prove that all twelve children did not have IBD and only had problems with diarrhoea or constipation. Both, they suggest, common amongst children with autism.

The defence case, on the other hand could not be more straightforward: between 1992 and 1998, a large number of children with serious and extraordinary bowel problems, linked in the first instance by parents testimony, to MMR and in the last instance, again according to parents testimony, to a regressive autistic-like disorder, arrived at the Royal Free Hospital in order primarily to seek treatment for their children's bowel problems. Any 'research' that followed the admission of these similarly affected children to the Royal Free, at least up until the assembling of the cases for the Lancet case review paper, was only research in that it was an attempt to find the cause, diagnosis and possible treatment, for the then undiagnosed serious bowel disorder that these children suffered.

When Miss Smith did get going on Thursday, after the lay-off on Tuesday and Wednesday, she re-started her journey through The Lancet paper children. Those who have regularly attended the hearing know these caricatures by heart. The children and their parents are anonymised and referred to by numbers. Miss Smith goes through the initial contact of the child's parents with the Royal Free Hospital, their attendance there and then their interaction with the doctors; particularly, obviously, the three doctors on trial. In the mouth of the prosecution, each child turns out to have more or less the same story. The parents, particularly mothers of the children, forced their GPs and local consultants to refer their children to the Royal Free Hospital. Dr Wakefield was involved, in varying degrees, in helping these parents get their children admitted to the Royal Free. Miss Smith makes a great deal of Dr Wakefield's involvement at this stage: 'What was a research worker doing, funnelling children into the gastrointestinal department of the hospital; he was a researcher whose job clearly forbade him from having any link to the clinical work carried out in the hospital'.

Once they arrive at the Royal Free Hospital, each child is then magically transformed by Miss Smith from a child in pain with a serious bowel disorder to the subject for inhumane experimentation by the doctors whose object was to bring a massive case against the vaccine manufacturers. According to the prosecution, the tests carried out are not the right tests with which to explore IBD, even if these children had even an inkling of this condition. And so Miss Smith goes on, impugning the integrity of the three caring professionals, on the grounds that they had not the slightest intention of acting to find either a diagnosis or a cure for the children, who anyway were not actually ill.

But what a mess the doctors made of their research! Of these three doctors, one Professor Walker-Smith was, before retirement, one of the most highly regarded gastroenterologists in Europe; a man who had dedicated his life to child health. Professor Murch had studied under leading colonoscopists and been a member of the ethics committee at the Royal Free Hospital; only a couple of years away from having the title of professor bestowed upon him. Dr. Wakefield, meanwhile, had at the end the 1980s arrived back from Canada, where he been a transplant surgeon, and had immediately received awards for his ground-breaking work on the origins of Crohn's disease.

The prosecution presents these three characters as incapable of organising a piss-up in a brewery. Carrying out research on twelve children without ethical committee approval, it is hinted sometimes without parental consent, without a control group and trying to rig the outcome of the research by cherry-picking the subjects and even switching results in a couple of cases at the end of the 'project'. These indeed are the three stooges of medical research. One is bound to wonder why these doctors would behave in this manner.

Having dealt with Transfer Factor and the charges over taking blood at the children's party, Miss Smith wound up her closing speech. If I'm honest I should say that at the end of the day her case is little stronger, but definitely not weaker, than when she first presented it nearly two years ago. Perhaps the most striking aspect of the case is that Brian Deer's dummy of a narrative has ended up walking, talking and dressed in a Saville Row suit. With the help of a motley collection of expert witnesses, the prosecution has managed to dress up Deer's ribald tale, so that it might be discussed in polite society.

To justify the continued funding and availability of drugs used in cytotoxic chemotherapy, a rigorous evaluation of the cost-effectiveness and impact on quality of life is urgently required.

[2004] TOXIC TREATMENT WITHOUT EFFECT Severely ill patients suffering from cancer (lung, breast, prostate, or intestinal tumors) are being treated with increasingly complex and costly cytotoxic agents. An epidemiologist has recently analyzed survival rates, and his findings indicate that, despite alleged positive outcomes, patients do not live any longer.
.......Survival rates have not improved over the past decades, and cancer patients do not live any longer than they did 25 years ago. While the outlook has improved slightly for patients suffering from intestinal cancer, breast cancer survival rates have decreased over the years. According to epidemiologist Hölzel this could be due to random fluctuations which do not have any scientific impact, but he concedes that a worse scenario could be possible: “I am afraid that the systematic treatment with chemotherapy, particularly in patients suffering from breast cancer, might be responsible for decreased survival rates.“
......This claim does not hold true for the drug therapy in cases of lymphoid cancers, Morbus Hodgkin, leukemia, sarcoma and testicular cancers; they can sometimes be healed in quite spectacular fashion. And it does not pertain to the pre-operative use of chemotherapy aimed at shrinking a tumor before a surgical intervention or the post-operative destruction of remaining cancer cells.
....Gerhard Schaller, 52, a gynecologist at the University of Bochum, says: “Chemotherapy has done practically nothing for women with late-stage breast cancer – there is literally much ado about nothing.“.......“There have been and there are no success stories. We treat large numbers of women without tangible proof of success. If you tell your patients that, they will be utterly destroyed.“
.....On a national basis, the revenue of cytostatic agents amounted to 1.8 billion euro for the period August 2003 to July 2004 – an increase of 14 percent over the previous year.
..... The proponents of chemotherapy like to refer to two studies confirming the treatment benefits. In one study, French researchers compared progress rates in 724 patients with metastasing breast cancer; survival rates three years after the diagnosis (and treatment between 1987 and 1993) increased from 27% to 43% (1994-2000).
    For the epidemiologist Dr. Hölzel, however, this finding is the result of a fallacy. Obviously doctors arrived at the diagnosis of metastasizing breast cancer in the period from 1994 to 2000 earlier and quicker than in previous cases. And since the disease had not progressed too far after the initial diagnosis and since life expectancy was higher, the researchers counted more days until death, which would explain the improved survival rates – in the absence of any kind of therapy.
    Another document cited regularly is the finding made public in August 2003 by researchers at the University of Texas in Houston. According to the publication the five-year survival rates in women with metastasizing breast cancer have improved continuously from 1974 to 2000 – from 10 to 44 percent. The article contains a review of cytostatic agents which allegedly have made this amazing improvement possible.
   But there is one caveat: The study compares women with and without metastasis. “The more recent groups were distorted because they included patients with more favorable prognostic profiles“, the authors of this celebratory article concede somewhere in the text.
   “The big drawback with cancer medicine is the complete lack of any systematic documentation,“ complains Hölzel in the view of faulty conclusions. His critical assessment and his demand for scientific integrity and solid evidence-based research, however, will hardly stir the industry’s conscience, for it is doing very well without any proven benefits in terminally ill cancer patients.

     An example of confirmation I experienced a few weeks ago:  A friend of mine who has mouth cancer (won't use the zapper -geesh!) asked me to take him to the radiation clinic for treatment. We arrived and, before he headed upstairs, said it would only take about half an hour.
     I sat down to read and, after about five minutes, noticed the words began to blur. For the past half century, peer-reviewed scientific research has documented how animals injected with oil-based adjuvants develop a variety of hypersensitive (allergic) and autoimmune diseases. I was a junior USAF officer who was forcefully given unexplained inoculations from a self-described "Army doctor" at Dugway, UT in 1981. Yet, I received a telephone call ordering me to appear for an appointment at the Dugway Army Medical Clinic early one morning; upon arriving, I was told that "they," the Army, had reviewed my shot record (something I knew was untrue because, due to my USAF flying status, I kept the only, and original, shot record on my person, something that the USAF Flight Surgeon at Hill AFB DID review with each visit) and determined that I needed more vaccinations (also untrue because, due to my worldwide deployment requirement, I already had been given "everything" and, having just moved twice in the previous year, had had my shot record reviewed and updated each time). After an hour of refusing, but under many threats, including that of a courts martial, but the promise of being given vaccination documentation at a future date (which I never received), I succumbed to the pressure and threats and was given three inoculations, each twenty minutes apart, by a "doctor" and his PA, in a private, closed examination room (other than the room used for vaccinations) with the PA's constant observation. Within weeks, I developed multiple, severe symptoms, very similar to, but more severe than those of Gulf War Illness (GWI), that remain to this day. I discuss the British findings, briefly, in Chapter Twelve, pg 250. A highly regarded British laboratory, Scientific Analyses Ltd. (SAL Ltd.) in Manchester, tested samples of British-made anthrax vaccine for the Granada Television network and found a thirty-six parts per billion concentration of squalene in two lots of the British vaccine. That is a fairly close match for the concentration found in one of the five lots confirmed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to contain squalene. Lot #FAV 043, according to the FDA, contained forty parts per billion. What is also noteworthy is the specific test used by SAL Ltd. to detect squalene in anthrax vaccine: flame ionization/gas chromatography. This is the same test used by the FDA. Interestingly, a laboratory the U.S. Army sub-contracted to test the vaccine, SRI, used a much less sensitive analysis called liquid chromatography, which would have been incapable of finding squalene in the concentrations present in either the U.S. or British anthrax vaccines. SRI has a long business association with the Department of Defense and an unanswered question is whether SRI deliberately chose to use a test that would invariably fail to find low concentrations squalene in the vaccine and thus allow the U.S. Department of Defense to declare its anthrax vaccine squalene-free, which it did. The coroner said it would be two weeks before a cause of death could be determined. The coroner and police treated me like I had committed a crime, taking pictures of her old bottles and formula. They questioned me over and over. It was not the kind of situation a mother should be in when her child has just died.
   About two months later, we received a telephone call from a Dr. Thomas Gill, of the Marion County Coroner's Office. He told us the cause of death was the Hepatitis B virus - which she could only have gotten form the vaccine. He told me that he would get the death certificate out to me very soon.

One day I was consulted by a young man who had cardiomyopathy - a degenerative disease of the heart muscle which, when severe, usually means that a heart transplant is the only hope for survival. He had been through the usual procedures, was obviously extremely ill and was on the waiting list for a suitable donor heart.
   I had read somewhere about an 'epidemic' of a particular form of cardiomyopathy in China where it was found that selenium supplements resulted in cures. I had also read about another form of this disease in New Zealand, occurring in sheep that were deficient in various trace elements. Therefore, I decided to try a broad mixture of various vitamins and minerals - Vitamin C, Vitamin E, B-Group Vitamins, Zinc, Magnesium, Manganese, Selenium and cod-liver oil. The patient stopped smoking, began to eat 'good' food and with the cooperation of his wife lead a good life-style. Slowly, at first, he began to improve, then this became obvious to an extent where the heart was functioning at 80% of normal. Eventually he was able to lead a normal life - working and without any apparent heart problems.
          Naturally, I was curious and pleased. So when I was confronted by an elderly gentleman with severe cardiomyopathy of rapid onset I decided to 'give him the works'. His heart, on the X-Ray was enormous and there was an extreme degree of cardiac failure. Response was dramatic. By the time he saw a specialist in Sydney a few weeks later his heart was of normal size and all was well.

No doubt, if I saw more patients I would eventually come across some where causes were different and results would, therefore, not be good but it so happened that I never had a failure. If I don't accept religious dogma (and I don't), I'm not going to accept scientific dogma. If it's there, it can be proven. I do recognise that some adults are capable of doing nasty things to children, but I'm uneasy about people saying: "Oh, if a baby has got subdural haemorrhage (SDH), retinal haemorrhage and brain swelling, it can only be shaken baby syndrome." I'm trying to find out the mechanism of bleeding in the brain in babies who have not been shaken.
I'm exploring all sorts of theories. My colleague Marta Cohen from Sheffield Children's Hospital and I have just published a paper with observations of our autopsy work on fetuses and babies over the last couple of years. We selected 55 cases - 25 late third trimester fetuses who died shortly before delivery and 30 newborns - who had haemorrhage within the membrane that covers and separates the two halves of the brain, and compared this with the level of brain hypoxia, or oxygen deficiency. We knew that none of these cases could possibly be inflicted trauma. We found that all those with severe brain hypoxia and half of those with moderate brain hypoxia had SDH. This is the same type of SDH that some people describe as specifically indicative of shaken baby syndrome. A similar pattern of haemorrhages has been described in the retinas of newborn babies dying of natural causes. We think that in these cases the haemorrhaging is caused by the hypoxia.
My concern is that by relying on this famous triad of symptoms - brain hypoxia, SDH and retinal haemorrhages - to diagnose shaken baby syndrome, when there's no evidence of inflicted trauma, we may be sending to jail parents who lost their children through no fault of their own. As scientists it's our duty to be cautious when we see the triad, and to take each case on its merits. We owe it to the children and their families.
