Eric's online ESP testing

created 11/3/96 last updated 6/19/98

I tried hard to find subjects for the following test:

The test would go for 30 days starting Cot 1. Every morning about 6:30,I'll select 1 of 10 objects and place it under a cardboard box on an otherwiseempty top shelf of my office. The list of items would now include the followingcommon objects :

note that the objects all have different colors, shapes, uses, materials(maybe even auras). It's possible that a few items could be confused witheach other. Before the start of the test I will give a sealed envelopeto my notary, Mrs. Mary Winslow of Jarrettown PA which lists a copy ofthe sequence of items to be used for this 30 day test called test 1. Eachday of the test, I will try to think about the item( to give help to anymind readers) At some point during the day, all participants should emailme directly with their single objective guess (I'd rather not go with hazyattributes like hard or shiny - because that could leave results debatable)I'll register all results and email a day latter to anyone interested justwhat the object for the previous day was. (this could provide feedbackto those who want it) I'll keep everyone's individual guesses confidentialunless someone wants their results made public. The overall results withjust a number to keep contestants anonymous will be made public only atthe end. Test takers are welcome to let me know their degree of confidence(10 - sure and 1 not so sure) with each result. -It could be an extra correlationto check later. At the end of the test it's a simple bit of math to interpretresults. We are trying to lay down terms now to avoid too many excusesbased on procedure from believers or skeptics

I had the following results on my first test involving 3 subjects:

--sorry, the tabs don't line up well in this:--- the items were:
  • day object nan nin suel success
  • ___ ______ ______ ______ ______ ________
  • 1 eraser key eraser glass --nin
  • 2 glass wood comb e
  • 3 spoon spoon sock comb ---nan
  • 4 glass wood e sock
  • 5 wood spoon spoon
  • 6 sock car wood
  • 7 eraser sock car
  • 8 paper eraser paper --nin
  • 9 wood eraser key
  • 10 sock eraser paper
  • 11 comb comb wood --nan
  • 12 paper glass e
  • 13 eraser e glass
  • 14 eraser car sock
  • 15 wood sock comb
  • 16 spoon comb spoon wood --nin
  • 17 car wood spoon
  • 18 sock sock --nan
  • 19 sock wood
  • 20 car key eraser
  • 21 eraser eraser e --nan
  • 22 e spoon key
  • 23 car wood comb
  • 24 eraser spoon paper
  • 25 wood sock paper
  • 26 sock eraser e
  • 27 wood car sock
  • 28 spoon e eraser
  • 29 eraser comb spoon
  • 30 paper glass car
  • It looks like nan is ahead of chance, nin about even and suel below. Ifnan could repeat that rate enough times, it would be very significant becausethere would be a much lower chance of it being coincidence. Let me knowif anyone's records differ. I still have the mail you all sent, but I couldhave erred. There seems to be a slight correlation with getting the nextor last days - but unless one agrees to check for such correlation's beforea test, you can count them. I'd love to find a volunteer to collect andlog reports in from people. I just returned the sock to it's mate (notthat holding on to my sweaty feet during a 5 mile run would be any better).I have a stand in sock to use for the next test. The idea of emotion isa good one. I could swap a knife for the spoon (I'm open to other swapideas) I picked the objects to have different colors, different materials, and different shapes, but I'm open to anything which would up the chances.I always thought that formal esp tests using 5 symbols were not uniqueenough to expect people to have a mental image of. It would be interestingto correlate hits with percent certainty. I'm keeping the same objects(with the exception of the replacement white sock) in a separate cabinetfor the next test. Eventually, I'll have pictures of the objects on thesame web page where I'll post results - that could help. I'll plan on "cyberseeing" you all for the next 30 day test (same rules) to start Jan 1. thanksagain for participating, eric
  • a neat test idea by a test subject:

From: ninnella@atlantis.org \ Internet: (ninnella@atlantis.org)To: Eric Krieg -voicenet \ Internet: (eric@voicenet.com) Subject: Re: anearly publishing of just the rough data. I just had a wild idea... I'venoticed in the chat rooms on IRC, if it could be coordinated, you couldcreate your own room and either arrange for your test subjects to be there(yeah, sure!) or test the general public. Using the whisper feature, theycould attempt identifying objects to the tester without influencing theother people in the room. And by using the whois feature you could makesure that no one person could take the test repeatedly under a varietyof nicknames. If you ever need a large number of subjects and a bunch ofraw data, this would sure supply it. I'm amazed that no one has done thisyet. You would have to use screen capture to save your data (at least Iwould) but I'd bet that if you named the room Psi-Test, you would havepeople streaming through! Nancy You would almost have to change objectsevery 10 minutes or so, so that the people could get a quick reward forparticipating..I can see it now- "and Vampirelady named all five objectscorrectly!!"
