M106 and Neighbors

Characteristics: Magnitude: Roughly magnitude 8.4 Size: about 19' x 8' Distance: 25 million light years RA: 12h 19m Dec: 47 degrees 18' Description: M106 is a bright spiral galaxy located in the constellation Canes Venatici. Like M63 and M94, it was discovered by Pierre Mechain in 1781 and later added to Messier's catalog. Several surrounding galaxies are present in this field of view, including NGC 4217 (lower left), NGC 4220 (lower right), and NGC 4248 (center). Please click here for more information about this interesting galaxy. Photographic Details: Date: March 11, 2007 Scope: Takahashi FSQ-106 on the G11 Losmandy Mount. Autoguider: ST402 with e-finder. Camera: Maxcam CM10 (Finger Lakes Instruments). Filters: Luminance, R, G, B Type II filter set (Astronomik). Exposures: L: 45 x 4'; R: 12 x 5'; G: 12 x 5'; B: 12 x 8'. Total exposure duration 6.6 hours. Conditions: Temperature 45 degrees at start of session; above average transparency; fair seeing; calm. Imaging performed at -20 degrees C throughout. Post-processing: Subs were debloomed with Ron Wodaski's Debloomer software, calibrated, aligned, and combined in MaximDL, followed by DDP in ImagesPlus (IP). Subsequent levels and curves adjustments in Photoshop CS (16 bit format). |
