No need to 'type' PDF files -- Ghostscript + Ghostview
automatically converts (non-encrypted) PDF files to text.
Version 5.50 installs easily (several operating systems).

Additionally, Acrobat Reader v3.01 provides the
standard clipboard 'copy all' and 'paste' functions,
for converting (one page at a time) to plain text.
