Hi all,
I was reading this thread and couldn't help adding my bit.
The effect you see happens with AC or DC. The larger the current through the
wires the more energetic the effect. This is how power lines (especially
distribution voltages like 11kV) get "wrapped" after a lightning strike or a
big fault. Try stringing a couple of lengths of wire imitating a power line
(say about 3 - 4m Long) and short out one end and apply power to other and
observe. The lines will attact and then release from eachother when the
current is cut off, causing them to swing back and forth. If you multiply
this by the usual voltages and prospective short circuit curents associated
with distribution circuits you will get an idea of the stresses involved
during faults.
