What if the hydrogen and oxygen were mixed before combustion (maybe even mix
it with air from outside, too).

Burning the hydrogen produced by electrolysis doesn't produce enough
energy to just keep the electrolysis and burning process continuing much
less power a car. There is someone out there claiming that if you
just put water into a car engine like gas (in vapor form ) and then use
a very very high voltage spark across the spark plug that it will cause
the water to instantly break down to hydrogen and oxygen ! --But I don't
see any of them driving around ? I also don't see General Motors buying
the GEET Patent either ??
