Hi Folks!

Here is an interesting article on how rejuvenation or
life extension would affect us and why some people
think its a very bad thing;

http://www.wired.com/news/news/technology/story/21186.html

According to Robert Bradbury, president of Aeiveos, an
aging research firm, life-extension advocates must
also fight several other foes: human naturalists,
religious deathists, and bureaucratic fearmongers.

The latter group, he said, can be particularly
dangerous.

'Obviously the Social Security Administration is going
to be concerned because ... their calculations are
going to be thrown out of whack if we live for 200
years,' Bradbury said.

Researcher Cynthia Kenyon warned attendees not to
discount the opinions of the so-called naturalists, or
environmentalists who regard life extension work as
irresponsible in a world that is already overpopulated
and environmentally strained.

Extending the lives of some people could exacerbate
human overpopulation, said Kenyon, a professor of
biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of
California, San Francisco.

Research has shown that human cells have a limited
ability to replicate, somewhere between 20 and 100
times, depending upon the type of cell and the age of
the donor. This cellular life span leads to an average
life expectancy in the 70s for most people.

But scientists, as part of this basic research
project, introduced telomerase, an enzyme that adds
back chromosomes to a DNA strand, said Dr. Calvin
Harley, chief science officer at Geron Corp. This
enzyme turns off, usually, just before a person dies
of so-called natural causes.
