At the stern was another large ball of metal, supported in a strong
framework, and connected to the shaft of the propeller at the stern
was a similar mechanism attached to each propeller and smaller balls
attached to a point of metal that extended from each side of the
vessel and from the prow.
And connected to each ball was a thin strip of metal similar to the
one attached to the lamp. He struck each one and when they vibrated
the balls commenced to revolve with intense rapidity and did not
cease till he stopped them with a kind of brake.
As they revolved intense lights, stronger than any arc light I ever
saw, shone out from the points at the sides and at the prow, but they
were different colors.
The one at the prow was an intense white light. On one side was green
and on the other red.

Hmm, vibrating strips of metal that send wave energy into a sphere
causing it to rotate or glow, depending on the configuration. It is
the same thing as using a rotating magnetic field to drive a magnet.
That brings up the question of sound and what happens when you excite
one mass with sound and bring it into proximity with another mass
tuned to an identical or different frequency.
I have seen a report that acoustically stimulated soap bubbles will
REPEL when two bubbles vibrate at the same frequency and attract when
not at the same frequency. Have to dig out that reference and post it
as a reference file.
I think we are missing a lot by relying on purely electrical or
magnetic phenomena. But that's because its EASIER to manipulate than
tuning masses and keeping them tuned to produce effects.
