I was FOR star wars, not against it, but as is the case with so many other
problems here, we collectively did not have the vision to see that costs
saved then would in reality cost much more in the future, same theme over
and over, we never seem to learn. An astronomer friend of mine told me of
this two years ago, nasa looked at it way before then, the conclusion was to
just wait and see what happens - as they knew tracking systems were in no
way capable of catching everything, the army did some laser testing (in part
directly related to this threat) years back. It always seemed strange to me
knowing this at least for four years as a possible major threat they
continued putting satellites up, more tax dollars pissed away. If it takes
down only 15% of the satellites bye bye baby. Recall the outage of ONE
Hughes satellite just a few months ago. November this year and next will
tell us a lot about our scientists, thier expert predictions, space systems,
and our reliance on satellite technology. There is a LOT of space out there
however, and the chances of only a few going down are pretty good, I hear 2%
outage from several astronomers, costly but not depression causing.
