kervans actual experiment was depriving chickens of calcium which did
not change the eggshell as long as they had access to mica shist, a
source of silicon. He believed chickens transmuted silicon as when
silicon and calcium were both removed, the eggs became rubbery. Add back
silicon only and the shellsbecame hard with high calcium content.
