Whew 105 degrees in the shade. No good news yet. The water cell dissolves
silicon rubber sealant. Tried a few test runs to charge the water but kept
coming up with a brown and green scum. Re-cleaned the cell each time
thinking that the vinegar and elbow grease might have missed something. Ran
the cell for three hours connected to the car as per the article. Each time
the fuel was stopped the engine died within seconds. Acted the same with or
without the cell running. After shut down inside the top of the cell was a
three inch thick layer of a substance resembling carbonated Hershey’s
chocolate syrup. To clear up the mystery I ran a few experiments. First
tried reverse osmosis filtered drinking water. Not enough impurities to
cause any bubbling at all hence no scum. Then tried two new sheets of .032"
x 2' x 10" 316 stainless in a quart glass jar with city water. In thirty
minutes the entire jar was filled with a suspension of brown green scum
with the viscosity of thin oil. The + plate was mottled with rust spots.
The negative appeared the same as it went in. After about three hours of no
current there is still a fine suspension in the water. The sides of the jar
are about fifty percent covered with fairly large bubbles. About a half
cup of a substance resembling moss covers the bottom of the jar and a thin
ring of rust stains the water line at the top. This more material than is
trapped in a convenience store water filter in six months. This material is
being generated by the electrochemical reaction. This must be why Joe
charges the water in a separate cell and transfers it to the working unit
that is not connected to the battery. Will have to wait for next weekend
for more fun.
