Check out U.S. patent #5744715 for a radionics device (excuse me, I meant
"tactile information detecting apparatus") that uses a computer to listen to
your finger rubbing the stick pad. It even attempts to explain why it
sticks.

Thanks to Patrick Robbins for the patent number and IBM for putting the
patent online.
