Stranded Magnet Wire?

Hi All,
Is there any reason you couldn't/shouldn't use stranded wire for winding
a coil?
My problem is locating large putups of magnet wire in wire sizes #18
and up. Seems like most wire manufacturers ( Belden, Alpha, Carol, etc.)
only sell 1/2 and 1 lb. rolls.
So, is there any reason for not using stranded if you have it on hand?
Also, to the earlier posts about winding a Tesla coil with iron or wire
not copper, a lot of the stranded is copper coated steel. Do you think this
would make a difference? Or does the coating give it characteristics like
copper? (Lots of color choices anyway) (-:
Thanks
Jim
