I think it it was single piston with no valves and use either .25 horsepower
compressor to power it

The horsepower rating could have been higher.
I have a version I though he might have used to make it work on the free
energy encyclopedia at the Zenergy site although unsure how Tesla made it.

Yes I agree the vibration built up over a period of time to become
destructive.
